Two Trailblazers Reunite to Continue Education, Advocacy and Awareness on Reproductive Medicine

Carr plans to make first book signing trip next month to Florida at Brown Fertility, a clinic founded by IVF pioneer pupil, Dr. Samuel E. Brown

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (December 28, 2021) – Elizabeth Jordan Carr, the first child conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) in the United States, celebrates her 40th birthday today. Now a wife, mother, former journalist, and advocate for fertility education, Carr is marking this medical milestone with the release of her memoir, “Under the Microscope,” and telling her personal miracle story.

At the time, the “test-tube” miracle baby’s arrival was a cause célèbre that inspired both fear of the unknown and hope. It has since become widely embraced as a hallmark of the pioneering work of Drs. Georgeanna and Howard Jones, of the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, in Norfolk, Virginia.

“Elizabeth Carr’s arrival, touted on front pages all over the world, marked the beginning of a new medical era and a revolution for those looking to grow their families,” said Dr.  Samuel E. Brown, a former pupil of the Joneses and founder of Brown Fertility, a fully comprehensive fertility clinic. Dr. Brown, in fact, completed his Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship at the Jones Institute.

Dr. Brown and Carr have partnered to promote education and awareness of stigmas surrounding fertility and in vitro fertilization, with Carr making her first official stop on her book tour in Jacksonville to speak to Brown Fertility staff next month. In a field relatively young compared to most other areas of medicine, there is still a lot of work to be done.

“Given the limitless potential of reproductive medicine, and the youngest form of medicine, 40 years doesn’t seem that long ago. We’re still at the forefront of a revolution and just as Elizabeth brought hope from the moment her life began, she continues to do so through her advocacy and passion and we are honored to be collaborating with her.”

The partnership will kick off during a January 2022 event held at Brown Fertility’s Jacksonville headquarters and attended by Dr. Brown, Medical Director and Founder of Brown Fertility, members of the Brown Fertility team, and Carr and members of her team.

“This story —my story —is not just about how far fertility options have come, it’s also about growing up and into yourself, and what it means to be ‘the first’ of something,” said Carr. “I am humbled to be able to lend my voice to those navigating whatever personal battles they may be facing. I hope this book serves as a reminder that we all are already enough.”
