Fertility testing doesn’t have to be painful.
A hysterosalpingogram is a diagnostic test used to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes. It is a quick procedure in our office usually performed after the menstrual period ends but before ovulation. The procedure involves the injection of a contrast dye into the uterus while X-rays are taken to visualize the uterus and fallopian tubes. HSGs are considered a very safe procedure, however, there is a set of recognized complications that occur 1% of the time that can include infection, iodine allergy, or spotting.
While a hysterosalpingogram is important for diagnosing infertility and other conditions, it can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful for some women. We don’t want that for you. With the help of Nitronox (an inhalation analgesia that’s often used in dental procedures), we can schedule you for a pain-free HSG from the start. Nitronox is 50% nitrous oxide gas and 50% oxygen—and 100% safe. It works by telling your body to release dopamine and endorphins, which help minimize any anxiety or discomfort you could feel.
Don’t feel like nitrous oxide is for you?
- Takes effect as you take deep breaths through a special mask
- Women say it makes them feel relaxed, light, and a pleasantly tingly
- Side effects like dizziness or nausea can occur but aren’t common
- With our guidance, you can self-administer throughout your procedure as you need it
- Wears off 5–10 minutes after you stop using the mask
It is important to note that while pain-free HSGs are possible, every woman’s body is different and some may still feel some level of discomfort or cramping. However, with our providers’ medical expertise and appropriate techniques, a pain-free HSG can be possible for many women. Brown Fertility understands that the comfort of our patients is of the upmost importance, so we take the time to get to know you, understand your needs and apply our years of experience and training to helping you meet your fertility goals.
