“Pain Free” HSG
Brown Fertility is excited to offer a “pain free” HSG with the introduction of Nitronox, the Inhalation Analgesia System. Below will provide you with detailed information on the service and some frequently asked questions.
What is Nitrous oxide?
When nitrous oxide is used for gynecologic pain or HSG test procedures, it is a mixture of 50% nitrous gas and 50% oxygen. This gas is inhaled through a mask that is provided by our facility. Nitrous oxide has been a common practice to help cope with pain for many years and is commonly used in dental offices.
How does it work?
The Nitronox system runs on demand-flow technology, meaning that it only delivers the gas mixture through a mask or mouthpiece when you inhale. After several deep breaths, you will start to feel more relaxed—this is because the gas triggers the release of the body’s natural endorphins and dopamine. Inhalations can be administered on an as-needed basis throughout your treatment. Once you stop inhaling, the feeling will wear off within 5-10 minutes.
How will I feel when using nitrous oxide?
Most will say that it makes them feel relaxed, arms and legs feel light, tingling in hands and feet, sinking into a chair feeling.
How does nitrous oxide help with pain during a procedure?
Each patient has a different experience when using nitrous oxide. Most women say the nitrous oxide helps “take the edge off”. It can help in lowering anxiety to better cope with pain. Some women do not find nitrous oxide helpful or do not like the way that is makes them feel. The use of nitrous oxide can be stopped at any time, and alternative pain management methods can be used.
Does it have any side effects?
Side effects are usually minimal. Dizziness, nausea—if left unmanaged, may result in vomiting. If you do not like how you feel during your self-administered application, you can stop and breathe room air, which should quickly reverse any negative effects.
